My supervisor attended two days company organized training program. Once he was back, I asked him to share the learnings, which he gladly did and also during the discussion he told me about a book, the trainer had suggested. I searched and ordered the book, by Viktor.

Man’s Search for Meaning (Viktor E. Frankl)

Viktor Frankl was the professor at Vienna Medical School. He survived three years in Auschwitz and other concentration camps during the World War II.

Viktor is the founder of logo therapy, the third Viennese school of psychotherapy.

He suggested,

  • Life is a quest for meaning and not primarily a quest for pleasure, as Freud suggested, or a quest for power, as Alfred Adler believed
  • Frankl saw three possible sources for meaning – significant work, love for another person, and courage during difficult times

In this book, he narrates his harrowing story of the camp life. He observed during his camp life that prisoners died less from lack of food, medicine than lack of hope or meaning.

He mentions that everything can be taken from a man but one thing – to choose one’s attitude on how to respond. The inner freedom can’t be lost.

Having a Why to live enabled them to survive. Don’t live in past but find a future goal. One is easily doomed without a faith in future.

“It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us.”

Frankl argues that the meaning of life is found in every moment of living even in suffering and death.

Success and Happiness is not to be pursued but must be ensued!

Even when everything is taken, we still can choose to respond which is still under control and no one take this away.
